Americans are responsible for using around 80 percent of world’s supply of pharmaceutical stimulants. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), most intakes into treatment are for drugs in the class of amphetamines. Painkillers have made a big splash in the United States although the worry should be just as much on prescription methamphetamines that have an extremely high for the potential of abuse.

The most well-known stimulants that are abused are Ritalin and Adderall. One of the lesser known methamphetamines is called Desoxyn. This is the brand name for the pharmaceutical drug methamphetamine hydrochloride that is prescribed for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or as an approach to help with obesity. While this prescription drug may not be quite as acknowledged, there are over 16,000 scripts that get written each year for Desoxyn.

The dosing is different for each case and should be used per the prescription depending on if it is taken for ADHD or for weight loss. Desoxyn is intended to give users a better sense of well-being along with increased energy, alertness, and enhanced mental abilities. As a stimulant, Desoxyn is provided at a very low dose that will be safely adjusted for each individual. Tablets are available in 5 mg that are intended for oral use. The methamphetamine in Desoxyn lasts for as long as 8 hours once the drug hits the bloodstream which produces a powerful effect that is also dangerous when it is misused.

The neurotransmitters that Desoxyn increases are called monoamines which also includes dopamine. When too much Desoxyn is consumed or taken without medical need, increased dopamine activity can lead to a euphoric high making people misusing the drug fall into an addiction. Desoxyn is often compared to street meth that is not quite as a potent feeling but gives much more clarity than that of the illicit drug, meth. In the same manner that people that become addicted to painkillers and turn to heroin because of the price and availability, people that abuse Desoxyn will eventually turn to street meth for the same reasoning without thinking of the danger that these drugs pose.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported that 12 million people abuse methamphetamine annually which is why Desoxyn is classified as a Schedule II substance. Using caution when using these drugs can help to keep the abuse minimized because the bottom line is that even though Desoxyn can be prescribed by doctor, overdose can happen to anyone who does not take the medication accordingly.
